Our History...

~ In September 1900 the building was opened as a Police & Fire station and was one of the UK's First purpose built Stations.

~ In 1929 the Fire Service moved to Rockingham Street.

~ In 1965 the Police moved to new premises just up the road. (West Bar) Prisoners now enjoyed the luxury of modern day cells!

~ In 1980 the Museum was acquired by "The South Yorkshire Historical Society" in a VERY DERELICT CONDITION

~ In 1982 The main yard was opened for viewing on one Sunday of every month and the admission cost was only 50p

~ The Museum is now one of the Worlds Largest Fire & Police Museum's and it's Tower is the only still standing Fire Service Tower in the UK.

When the museum first opened they had no engine house doors. The original world famous Red fire service doors

We also had a lot of work to do and one of the first jobs was to dig up the cobbled yard and bring the original cobbles back.

Once these jobs had been done we could start to use this area to display some of our fantastic exhibits.

Thanks to collectors and donations the museums little collection started to grow.

When the museum first opened there was only very little rooms open to view and now nearly the hole building is open for visitors to enjoy as much as we do.

Many thanks to all the people involved in the museum from the very start to the present day.
